1st Attempt
1843: Trinity House surveyed to build a lighthouse
1847: Work began
..James Walker, the engineer in chief decided on a 120feet (37metres) design which consists accomodation, and a light on top of iron legs.....
Failed : 5 February 1850- a storm washed the tower away
2nd Attempt
1851: James Walker began to build a stone structure
Difficulties>>paucity of land available area, and the slope of the rock meant that the
lowest stone had to be laid below the water level of the lowest spring tides
.....Tower was completed without loss of life.....
1 September 1858: Lighthouse shone its first light
1881: Sir James Nicholas Douglass inspected the tower, designed renovation to reinforce the
structure
1887: Work completed
Cost spent on reaching this lighthouse we have today:
The first iron lighthouse : 12,500 pounds
The second granite lighthouse: 34,559 pounds
The third improved lighthouse: 64,889 pounds
Total cost: 111,948 pounds
It is referred to the
King of the Lighthouses as it is indeed a very impressive structure..
